The

Leave Stickle Barn Car Park by the path in the top corner near the shelter

Follow the path through a gate

The Cumbria Way near Kirk Howe, Great Langdale

Continue to follow the path between a good wall on the left and a broken wall on the right

The Cumbria Way near Rossett, Great Langdale

Drop down to cross the footbridge over Dungeon Ghyll

Keep to the lower, descending path beyond the gate

Go through the gate at the top of the hill

Leave the main path by turning left onto a less obvious rough path immediately beyond the trees

Follow the path uphill beside the wall

Ignore a path joining from the right beyond a National Trust sign and continue uphill to the band of trees

The Route - Great Langdale (New Dungeon Ghyll) to Rosthwaite


Distance: 14.4km (9 miles)

Shortly before passing an old barn, a well preserved section of the ancient Norse ‘ring garth’ wall that once enclosed the valley can be seen on the right

A gate is reached behind the buildings of Old Dungeon Ghyll


Go through the gate

Turn sharp right, crossing a small ford and follow the track beside the wall


(Southbound walkers turn sharp left up the path here)


(Turn left here to reach the facilities at the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel)


Great Langdale Alternative Route: The Cumbria Way alternative route from The New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel is rejoined at the footpath gate in the wall on the left beyond the ford

Follow the path as it drops steeply down to the left to join a track

The track follows the wall on a wide drove road leading up the valley

The Cumbria Way near Middle Fell Farm, Great Langdale

Ignore the farm track to the left and keep straight ahead on the main track


(The farm track is a public right of way through the farm yard and is the shortest route to the valley road and bus stop, but to avoid inconvenience to the farmer it is desirable to use the nearby permitted right of way at NY285061)

Where the wall ends, continue straight ahead following the main track up the valley

Go through two gates forming part of a complex of sheepfolds and continue to follow the track beside the wall

The track approaches Mickleden Beck and becomes a rough path as it nears the valley head

As the path approaches a sheepfold, it crosses a footbridge over Stake Gill

At the path junction beyond the bridge, near the sheepfold, take the smaller path to the right of the cairn

The path immediately starts to climb

Follow the path parallel to Stake Gill; as the ground steepens, the path starts to zig zag

The path, rough in places, becomes less steep as it approaches the top of the pass

The path finally levels out as it enters the open moorland area of Langdale Combe …

Follow the zig zags up the steepening fell side below Black Crags as the path climbs up the pass

Continue to follow the path, which can be rough in places, down the valley

Go through a gate beside a large boulder built into the end the wall

Do not cross the footbridge over Langstrath Beck. Continue to follow the path down the valley


Langstrath Alternative Route:

The alternative route via XXX Langstrath is rejoined at the end of the footbridge

The Cumbria Way near Johnny House, Langstrath

Keep straight on through the narrow part of the road between the buildings to the front of the Royal Oak Hotel beyond

Rosthwaite, Borrowdale

At the end of the minor road, turn left onto the main road

Cross the bridge over Stonethwaite Beck and follow the road beyond

The lane ends at a minor road near the Hazel Bank Hotel entrance


Turn left onto the road

The lane drops down beside Stonethwaite Beck, then climbs and turns sharp right away from the river


Continue to follow the lane

Go through the left hand gate into a lane

The lane runs between two high walls and turns sharp left along the bottom of a wood


Keeping close to the wall, follow the track round to the left

Where the track divides at two gates, go through the lower left hand gate and follow the lane beyond

The track leaves the wall slightly crossing open ground

Continue to follow the track alongside the wall

At the track junction, turn left to visit Stonethwaite village, but keep straight along the path to follow The Cumbria Way to Rosthwaite and Keswick

The track passes through a gate, beyond which is a junction

… and crosses Stake Gill at a ford


Continue to follow the path as it climbs away from the ford

The path is clear on the ground and easy to follow.  It winds through an area of hummocky glacial moraine

Where the path does a very sharp right hand turn at a path junction, keep straight on to follow the path crossing some stones over an area of bog


(Southbound walkers keep right here, on the lower descending path)

After 40m (45 yds) at a second path junction, keep right following the path leading up towards a cairn

The cairn marks the summit of Stake Pass (N 54°28.102’ W 03°08.116’) and the former (pre 1975) county boundary of Westmorland and Cumberland


(The boulder beside the path just before the cairn has a large old Ordnance Survey Benchmark (arrow symbol) carved on it; the survey height is 480.30 metres (1575.8 feet) above sea level)

Continue past the cairn following the path that now starts to descend to Langstrath and Borrowdale

At the end of the of the Stickle Barn Car Park access road, turn left behind the low fence onto the signposted public footpath

Approaching the end of the field, pick up a slight track which drops down towards a gate

Turn left and cross the field on a feint path

Cross a small stream and continue to follow the path

Go over the stile in the corner of the field and continue straight ahead across the next field

Go through the gate into a field that is sometimes used as an overflow for the Old Dungeon Ghyll car park

Go through the gate onto the road
