Cumbria Way

The

Follow the road past old quarry workings to a turning circle, where a sign points the way down a footpath to the right

Keep left and cross the road bridge over Langdale Beck


Turn up the road to the right immediately beyond the river bridge

Follow the riverside path for a further 30m (35 yds) and go through the gap in the wall adjacent to the car park entrance

Go through the gate beside the Elterwater car park

The Cumbria Way, Elterwater

The track emerges beside Langdale Beck and takes the form of a walkway following the riverbank to Elterwater

Continue to follow the track as it emerges beside a field and bends left towards the river


(Where the track bends sharply left the former route of The Cumbria Way from Skelwith Bridge to Elterwater goes straight ahead, crossing the fields and rejoining the current route at Elterwater car park)

The track continues beside Elter Water and enters a wood at a location often busy with tourists


Follow the track through the wood

The track loops around the edge of the field, keeping beside the river


Go through a gate at the corner of a wood and continue along the broad track initially alongside the River Brathay

Go through the gate and follow the broad track to the left keeping beside the River


(The former route of The Cumbria Way from Skelwith Bridge to Elterwater goes straight ahead after the gate and rejoins the current route at the far side of the field)

From Woodburn Bridge above Skelwith Force, where The Cumbria Way crosses the River Brathay, follow the path upstream beside the river


From here to Elterwater is one of the busiest sections of The Cumbria Way

Distance: 6.7km (4.2 miles)

Follow the footpath through the trees


The buildings on the opposite side of Langdale Beck, now a time ownership, hotel and country club complex, were formerly those of the Elterwater Gunpowder Works

Where the path turns left near a stone seat, keep straight on over some rough ground to the footbridge over Langdale Beck

Cross the footbridge and follow the path to the main road (B5343)

Turn left onto the main road, pass the parking area and the Wainwrights’ Inn on the left

Continue on the main road for 40m (45 yds) beyond the Inn and take the track sloping up on the left

When the lane widens onto some open ground, follow the track beside the wall on the right…

…then cut straight across the small green to the road leading to the right of the house beyond

Follow the road

Go straight ahead through the gate at the end of the road, into the yard of Thrang Farm

Turn half-right and drop down into the lane leading from the far corner of the yard

Go through the middle of the three gates and continue along the narrow lane between stone walls

Follow the track

Where the lane joins a track, turn left

The track passes a quarry waste heap, turns left and crosses New Bridge over Langdale Beck


After the bridge, go through the gate beside the cattle grid and follow the concreted track as it loops round to the right

Follow the track alongside the river past Baysbrown Farm Campsite

After passing through three gates, the track turns away from the river


Continue to follow the track

Follow the track in front of the house

The track turns to the right near the corner of the barn

Keep to the right at the path junction near the barn and follow the path along the bottom of a bank

Pass through the fourth gate and follow the main track as it swings left across the field towards the buildings of Oak Howe


Ignore the path turning off to the right and crossing over the river

After 130m (145 yds) the path turns sharply left into an old walled lane


At the end of the lane the path drops down to a gate

Go through the gate

Follow the path beside the wall

The path leaves the wall, continue to follow the path as it climbs steadily across the fell side

The path crosses a small stone slab bridge and enters an old sheep fold


Leave the sheep fold by the gate in the corner

Go through the gate and follow the path through the gap in the next stone wall towards the farm buildings

Follow the path as it drops down the fell side to a gate in the corner of two walls

Turn right over a footbridge and go through the gate into the farm yard

Leave the farm yard at the bottom right hand corner by a short lane leading down to a gate


Go through the gate and continue along the farm access track

Cross the bridge over Langdale Beck and continue to follow the track across the field

Go through the gate onto the road


Turn left then almost immediately right into the entrance of the Stickle Barn Car Park

Walk along the short car park access road

Walk to the shelter at the top left hand corner of the car park

Main Route: Turn right into the car parking area


Great Langdale Alternative Route: To take the The Cumbria Way alternative route to The Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel turn left at the end of the car park onto the signed footpath and through a gate in the wall
