Bassenthwaite village

Skiddaw and the village of Bassenthwaite

Bassenthwaite, a compact village nestling below Skiddaw near the head of the lake to which it gives its name, has an importance to Cumbria Way walkers as the only significant settlement near the low route between Keswick and Caldbeck. Although not on The Cumbria Way, it is easily reached from The Cumbria Way by a pleasant field path or a walk along a quiet back road

Bassenthwaite Lake is a national nature reserve largely due to the presence of vendace, an endangered cold water species of white fish found naturally in only two locations in the UK, the other being Derwentwater. Previously declared extinct in the Lake, there is evidence that some may have survived, although recent surveys have failed to find any.  Strenuous efforts to remove pollutants from the water are underway in a hope that the population can be revived
