Coniston

Coniston

The compact village of Coniston, beautifully situated between the head of the lake and the foot of the Coniston Fells, is a popular destination for tourists, walkers and climbers

One of the most popular of the Lake District fells, Coniston Old Man, 803m (2,633 ft) high, was until 1974 the highest summit in the county of Lancashire, and it is easily reached by a stiff climb from the village.  Locally referred to simply as ‘The Old Man’, on a busy summer’s day it is not uncommon for there to be more than a hundred people clustered around the summit cairn!

Coniston’s main industries were traditionally mining and slate quarrying.  The copper mines above the village were probably worked from Roman times but extraction of copper finally ended in the 1940s.  It is said that it cost £2 to mine every £1 worth of copper sold, and the mines have a history of poor working conditions and loss making ventures. Now nature is healing the scars of the many mines and former quarries to be found on the slopes of Coniston Old Man and the surrounding fells but quarrying activity still continues, persisting in the disfigurement of the landscape in this sensitive area of the National Park

Victorian artist, art critic, social commentator and philanthropist John Ruskin made his home at Brantwood, overlooking Coniston Water, and in more recent times Donald Campbell, the only person to set both world land and water speed records in the same year in 1964, broke the world water speed record on Coniston Water in four successive years
