The Square, Cummersdale

On the outskirts of Carlisle, the village of Cummersdale has an industrial past closely associated with milling and later textile weaving and printing.  The works of Stead McAlpin, established beside the River Caldew in 1835 and adjacent to The Cumbria Way, now owned by R. Soper Ltd. trading as Sandown & Bourne, still provides specialised textile printing services. Immediately to the north of the village tyres are manufactured in the large Pirelli factory; with more than one thousand people working there it is one of the main local employers

The Spinners Arms is a Grade II listed building dating from 1930. Replacing an earlier pub, it was built under the Carlisle State Management Scheme and still retains many original features. It is the home of the Carlisle Brewing Company
