Gawthwaite

A small settlement consisting of little more than a farm and a few houses occupying an upland setting clinging to the side of Kirkby Moor, Gawthwaite has a special significance to the northbound Cumbria Way walker as the point at which the Lake District National Park is entered

Noticeable are several old quarries in the vicinity of the village, the local blue-grey slate having been extensively quarried and used for roofing and building. Quarrying activity near Gawthwaite has now ceased, although some slate is still quarried in in the locality
