Bowten Beck is the small stream crossed immediately after the road junction (seen under a grating on the left).  It forms the boundary of the Lake District National Park, which The Cumbria Way leaves at this point

At the end of Friar Row where the road turns into a track, ignore the footpath to the left and keep straight ahead through the gate


Follow the track to the right of the fence

Shortly before reaching the gate of the sewage works, bear right off the track and aim for the corner of the sewage works fence

Beyond the end of the fence drop down the field to the gate into the wood 40m (45 yds) ahead

Follow the track beside the river

Where the track turns away from the river ignore a small path leading off to the right. Keep left on the main track as it starts to climb


The track, climbing steeply, makes a sharp turn to the right and continues to climb

Eventually reaching a junction where a track merges from the left

Go through the gate

Walk down the field following the feint path, keeping to the right of the bank of gorse bushes


(Note: The public bridleway marked upon the Ordnance Survey map is shown as going through the middle of the gorse bushes and is impossible to follow on the ground)

Cross some wet ground below a natural spring.  An old water tank serves as a cattle trough

When the final clump of gorse bushes has been passed on the left, bear left towards a small gate in a wire fence 70m (80 yards) ahead

Go through the gate, bear right taking a level course across the field beyond

Keep straight on where a path joins from the right

Continue straight ahead beyond the gate where a forest track joins from the left
